16-year-old girl dies after struck by boat propeller in Connecticut
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Police say a 16-year-old girl has been killed and another 16-year-old girl seriously injured Wednesday when they were struck by the propeller of a boat towing them in Long Island Sound near Greenwich.
The two girls were reportedly tubing behind the motor boat when the tow rope became ensnared in a propeller, pulling the girls into the spinning blades. Greenwich police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said two other girls were operating the boat at the time of the incident.
"It was a horrible accident," one law-enforcement source told The New York Post. "If more care was taken, it would never have happened."
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The girl killed in the incident was identified as Emily Fedorko, The Connecticut Post reported. Fedorko, a gymnast and honor student, was to be a junior at Greenwich High School, the report said.
Gray said the girl died at the scene off Greenwich Point Park. The other girl had a soft tissue leg injury that he said "required extensive sticking." She is expected to recover.
He said it appears to have been "a tragic accident." Authorities are still investigating.
