Do you have a desire to hit the open trails just like Reese Witherspoon in the movie “Wild”?

Inspired by Cheryl Strayed’s 2,600 mile journey, hundreds of hikers are now hitting the Pacific Crest Trail looking for adventure, excitement and seriously beautiful scenery.

One hiker, who goes only by Mac on his travel blog Halfway Anywhere, cataloged his 142-day journey with a one second-per-day video that showcases the breadth of terrain on his grueling trip. From Mexico to Canada, the Pacific Crest Trail passes through 25 national forests and seven national parks, including the Cascade Range.

Though no official park figures have been released, before the book was published about 300 people took out permits to hike the trail each year. But estimates for this year range from 1,600 to 3,000. That jump in popularity has been dubbed the “Wild Effect.”

Mac cautions that while this trail may look serene, the 5-month journey is not for the inexperienced or faint of heart, writing "the PCT is not all smiles and miles – it’s a merciless, ass-kicking, monster that you are incapable of waging battle with; you just have to take whatever the trail gives you."
