A winter storm hitting North Texas has grounded almost 1,000 flights at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

American Airlines said it had canceled 961 arrivals and departures --or about 60 percent of the carrier's daily schedule --at the airport as of 8 a.m. on Monday.

North Texas is under a Winter Storm Warning through 6 p.m. Monday. Freezing rain is currently falling in some cities with temperatures in the 20s.

Customers were advised to check with the airline before leaving for DFW to see if their flight was canceled. The airline offered customers the option to change their travel plans with no ticket change fee if their flight was scheduled to depart DFW on Sunday or Monday.
