Jossy Mansur on Timing of New Arrests in Holloway Case

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, HOST: Breaking news tonight, arrests in the Natalee Holloway case. Joran van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers, Deepak and Satish, are under arrest. They are charged with manslaughter. Why now?

Joining us live in Aruba is Jossy Mansur, managing editor for Diario newspaper. Jossy, all three have been arrested, Deepak, Satish and Joran?

JOSSY MANSUR, MANAGING EDITOR, DIARIO: Yes, ma'am, they have. All three of them are under arrest now.

VAN SUSTEREN: Why have they been arrested?

MANSUR: They've been arrested because some new evidence came up, according to the prosecution, and they are being charged with involvement in the voluntary manslaughter of Natalee Holloway or having caused serious bodily harm to her resulting in her death.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Now, I have a copy of the press release — and we finally got one in English, I might add — and it says there is, quote, "new evidence." Any idea what that new evidence is?

MANSUR: No. We tried our best today to find out, but it wasn't possible. They're not flacking any kind of detail.

VAN SUSTEREN: Right now, are Deepak and Satish in jail in Aruba? Are they in jail tonight?

MANSUR: Yes, they are. They are under arrest. I don't know whether they're — they're not in jail in the prison, but they are with the police — at one of the stations of the police.

VAN SUSTEREN: Where is Joran van der Sloot tonight?

MANSUR: He is in Holland. He's — according to our information, he will be brought to Aruba tomorrow.

VAN SUSTEREN: And is there a court appearance at some point in the near future for these three?

MANSUR: Definitely. Friday, the Kalpoe brothers will be brought before the judge, who will decide on the basis of the evidence presented by the prosecution whether they will continue to be held under arrest or will be set free.

VAN SUSTEREN: Jossy, this is a different prosecutor and a different police chief, right?

MANSUR: It's completely different, yes. We have two Dutch what we call (INAUDIBLE) Dutch prosecutors now here instead of Karin Janssen, and we have a new team in the police department that is handling this case directly under the leadership of Adolpho Richardson.

VAN SUSTEREN: Now, we know that Joran van der Sloot has been in college in Holland for the last year-and-a-half. What are Deepak and Satish doing? What have they been doing?

MANSUR: I believe that Satish was still in school. I know that Deepak was working over in one of these Internet cafes. And I know that Satish was arrested at his home. We don't know where Deepak was arrested. And we know that Joran was arrested at his home in Arnheim in Holland.

VAN SUSTEREN: Now, here in the United States, we've followed this case pretty closely, and frankly, we never saw this one coming. Did you know this was going to happen?

MANSUR: Absolutely not. It was a surprise to all of us.

VAN SUSTEREN: Is it safe to assume that no body has been found?

MANSUR: No, it is not safe to assume that. We don't know that because they are not releasing any kind of information as to this new evidence that they have.

VAN SUSTEREN: Now, it says that they came over, they looked at the file, the reinvestigated it, but that there's something beyond just simply looking at the file, that they actually hit the pavement and found something?

MANSUR: It's possible, but we haven't had any confirmation of that from anyone.

VAN SUSTEREN: Where is Karin Janssen these days?

MANSUR: Karin Janssen is in Holland. She's exercising the same kind of work that she did here, as a prosecutor.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. And she's been out of that job for quite some time. What's the reaction in Aruba to this news?

MANSUR: You know, it's caused a lot of interest here. People are really curious to know what this is all about. They hope — most of us hope it's not another one of these arrest and letting go affairs, and that they do have some solid evidence to bring this case to a closure.

VAN SUSTEREN: Jossy, thank you.

MANSUR: Quite welcome.
