Skype gets PayPal-powered 'send money' feature

Sending money to friends or family members is about to get a little easier with Skype and PayPal.

"Questions like 'Can I reimburse you for those movie tickets?' or 'What do I owe you for Mom's gift?' no longer require switching from Skype to your browser or banking app to start a payment process," the Skype team wrote in a blog post Wednesday. "Starting today, we're rolling out the ability to send money with PayPal on Skype."

To try it out, swipe right when you're chatting with someone then tap Send Money. The first time you try to use this new feature, you'll be asked to confirm your location. Skype said the feature will initially work in 22 countries; check out the list below.

If the feature is available is your area, you'll first need to link your PayPal account to your Skype profile. If you don't already have a PayPal account, you'll be prompted to create one the first time you use the feature, regardless of whether you're the sender or recipient. Once you get it set up, follow the steps to complete the money transfer process, and voila.

"PayPal handles the money transfers and usually within moments, your money is on its way," the team wrote.

You'll need to latest version of the Skype for iOS or Android to send money, but the recipient can be using any version of the app. And don't worry about sending money abroad.

"Currency exchange is no problem," the team wrote. "If you're sending funds from the US, for example, to someone in Europe, you will have the option to send money in Euros."

Send Money currently works in the US, Canada, UK (Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man), Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.

Facebook Messenger has offered a similar in-app payment feature since 2015, letting you add a debit card and transfer cash with just a few taps. Messenger does not, however, support PayPal.
