North Korea Signs Up for Twitter

The secretive nation of North Korea is the newest member of Twitter.

North Korea has begun micro-blogging under the name @uriminzokhas, stepping up a propaganda campaign that began last month with a few video clips posted on YouTube, reported the AFP news agency.

The country has issued only 9 tweets so far, mainly pointing its over 2,300 followers to anti-Seoul and anti-U.S. statements on the country's official website, www.uriminzokkiri.com.

South Korea blocks the site and few in North Korea even have access to a computer, the news agency reported.

One tweet dismissed accusations that a North Korean torpedo sank a South Korean warship in March. Another criticized U.S.-led sanctions on North Korea and Iran. Most followers posted derisive comments in Korean, AFP said.

Last month North Korea opened an account with YouTube, a popular global video-sharing site, uploading video clips which praised leader Kim Jong-Il and denying its role in the sinking.

President Obama has nearly 5 million followers on the micro-blogging site, while Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez has built up almost 750,000 followers. North Korea has just over 2,300, and it has yet to follow a single person -- meaning it isn't following Oprah Winfrey or Ashton Kucher.

Yet.
