Imagine calling a friend in the middle of a movie -- without having anyone angrily turn to you with a finger on their lips.
German researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology claim they've developed the phone of the future -- a lip-reading cell that allows for soundless communication.
Their software enables people to move their mouths silently and to have the motion be picked up and translated into sound for people on the other end of the call. The process is based on the principle of electromyography -- the acquisition and recording of electrical potentials generated by muscle activity.
The latest research will be presented at the Hanover CeBIT tradeshow which showcases up-and-coming technologies.
The researchers believe the communication could be used to transmit confidential information, such as the transmission of passwords and PINs.
