Apple launched the Mac App Store on Thursday, allowing users to download more than 1,000 free and paid software applications through their iTunes accounts.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said Thursday that the store "is off to a great start ... We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps.”
The move brought the popular app store, currently available on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, to Apple computer models for the first time. The store is available on Macs using the Snow Leopard operating system or through a software update for machines running some older versions, the company said.
The store offers new and existing apps in several categories, including education, games, graphics & design, lifestyle, productivity and utilities.
Apple said users can install Mac apps on every Mac they use and even download them again if they purchase a new Mac product.
