A Houston man who moved to the New Orleans area for reconstruction work after Hurricane Katrina has been sentenced to almost 50 years in prison for attempting to kill his former employer in Kenner, La.

Deyton Martinez, 24, was convicted of attempted second-degree murder in the January 2006 stabbing of Manuel Carillo.

State Judge Donnie Rowan handed down the sentence of 49 1/2 years on Monday.

Carillo was stabbed as many as 18 times, Assistant District Attorney Michael Morales said.

Martinez testified that Carillo chastised him and slapped him, causing him to black out in anger. His next memory was of being pulled over by police in Carillo's pickup truck in Kenner.
