Talk about a big debut! Their performance at Woodstock was only Mountain's fourth gig. The band went onto have one big hit in 1970 with the song Mississippi Queen.
Today, they are touring with HippieFest and will perform at the Bethel Woods Heroes of Woodstock Festival on August 15th. Apparently, lead vocalist and guitarist Leslie West intends to marry his fiancé on stage at the end of the band's set.
At Woodstock ’69, Jefferson Airplane was scheduled to perform at 9pm Saturday night. Due to extensive delays, it was 6am on Sunday by the time they took the stage! Singer Grace Slick announced to the crowd, "Alright friends, you have seen the heavy groups, now you will see morning maniac music, believe me, yeah. It's a new dawn...Good morning people."
After Jefferson Airplane split in 1972, Slick and several other members of the band went on to perform in Jefferson Starship. Slick was also in Starship, and performed as a solo artist. Today, she spends her time painting.
Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Because their agent rented a helicopter and they were able to avoid pre-concert traffic, Sweetwater became the first band to perform at Woodstock . They took the stage after Richie Havens, who performed as a solo act because his bass player was stuck in the lines of vehicles trying to get to the festival.
The band broke up after lead singer Nancy Nevins was severely injured in a car accident in 1969.
Three of the band's original members, including Nevins, reunited for Woodstock '94.
The Who didn't take the Woodstock stage until very early Sunday morning. As Roger Daltry was singing the chorus of "See Me, Feel Me".
The Who went on to a Hall of Fame career and still perform to this day.
Canned Heat experienced a little internal strife prior to taking the stage at Woodstock . Shortly before the festival, guitarist Henry Vestine left the band after an argument with bassist, Larry Taylor.
Fearing that they didn't have enough rehearsal time, drummer Fito de la Parra also tried to leave the band. Thankfully, the band's manager was able to convince de la Parra to perform and flew the Canned Heat to Bethel on a press plane, arriving just in time!
Although three members have passed away, Canned Heat still tours today.
