DETROIT – A Detroit-area woman who wanted to freeze her eggs before going to prison for six years has failed to persuade a judge to delay her sentence by two weeks.
U.S. District Judge Marianne Battani says Dawn Hanna had plenty of time to get her "personal business" in order. The decision Wednesday means Hanna must report to prison next week.
Hanna turns 37 in November. She was convicted last year of breaking a U.S. trade embargo with Iraq by selling telecommunications equipment before the outbreak of the war in 2003.
In a court filing, Hanna offers several reasons for a two-week delay in reporting to prison, including a procedure to freeze her eggs due to her age and length of her sentence.
The judge says Hanna already has been granted many extensions.
