FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A woman who left a Broward County hospital in 2001 with her newborn baby in her arms and a foot-long gauze in her abdomen has been awarded $2.4 million in a malpractice suit, CBS 4 reports.
Karlene Chambers claimed in her suit that she is now permanently disabled and no longer able to have children after doctors left a sponge inside her after performing a Caesarean section on Sept. 11, 2001.

The suit said that two weeks after giving birth, the first-grade teacher was admitted to the intensive care unit of another hospital for abdominal pains.
A CAT scan revealed the sponge left inside Chambers.
