A woman trying out her new van accidentally hit four members of her family, including her infant daughter.

Police said the accident happened at an Annapolis apartment complex just before 10 p.m. Thursday, when the Patel family gathered to see their new Honda Odyssey. The woman driving — 35-year-old Urvashiben Patel — accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes and ran into her family gathered on the steps of the complex's community center.

Patel's 3-month-old daughter, Parchi Patel, was in critical condition Friday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Also in critical condition was 44-year-old Saroj Patel, whose arm was severed. Another victim was Mrs. Patel's mother-in-law, a 75-year-old woman listed in critical but stable condition at the hospital.

The woman driving was too distraught to talk to a reporter from The (Annapolis) Capital Friday morning. There was no immediate word on whether any charges would be filed in the accident.
