Will Al Gore Run for President in 2008?

JOHN GIBSON, HOST: The "Big Debate": Will Al Gore run for president in '08. He can soon have an Oscar in one hand and a Nobel Peace Prize in the other. Plus, he has reportedly piled up $100 million since losing the presidency seven years ago, so there is plenty of cash for a run.

Who could blame the one-time next president of the United States Al Gore for saying to himself, hey, why not? Could he just be waiting in the wings for his big moment? FOX News political analyst Kirsten Powers is here now.

I know you don't believe this.

KIRSTEN POWERS, FOX NEWS POLITICAL ANALYST: Where are you getting this?

GIBSON: Look at things. First of all here is today, Jimmy Carter endorses him. I'm not a big Jimmy Carter proponent but Democrats are. No. 1. No. 2, he has got the money. While Hillary is out there raising cash he could write one check. No. 3, he thinks he won.

POWERS: Here is the thing: He did win. He could run. That's absolutely right. He has great name recognition.

GIBSON: The left loves him.

POWERS: He has great experience. The left loves him. The centrists love him. He is very popular, but that doesn't mean he will run. And there is no reason to believe he is running.

GIBSON: OK. Wait a minute. What do you mean no reason?

POWERS: There is nothing he has said to make...

GIBSON: Let's just take a look at the last couple of days with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama slashing each other with knives.

POWERS: They had a disagreement.

GIBSON: They had a disagreement? I mean, when they are taking each other down doesn't a guy like Gore stand in the wings when their bodies are thrown on the floor I'll walk over them.

POWERS: They are having a campaign. It's a presidential campaign. Granted it is happening in a much more intense way much more earlier than normal. This is just a campaign. Gore is not going to get in for that reason. Gore is going to get in because he decides this is what I want to do with my life and right now there is no reason to believe that Gore wants to do this.

GIBSON: Kirsten Powers, when did Al Gore not want to do this with his life? I mean, he was raised to run for president.

POWERS: In the last election — the reality is he is very happy doing what he is doing. He is very good at doing what he is doing. He is very passionate about what he is doing.

GIBSON: Once he has made a pile of money and he has been successful...

POWERS: Why do you want him to run so much?

GIBSON: Well, I think it is interesting that there he is waiting in the wings, with all this fighting going on and he could be, very early, you'll admit very early. So there is plenty of time for Al to come waltzing in and say I'm here to save the Democrats.

POWERS: That's true. He could do that and there are certainly people out there who would like him to do that. You are going to see a very vigorous draft Gore movement, probably. There are a lot of people that really like him. But at this point there is no reason to think he is getting in the race.
