DUARTE, Calif. – Firefighters have nearly surrounded a 35-acre wildfire in the bed of the San Gabriel River between Duarte and Azusa while a separate small brush fire forced the closure of part of the Foothill Freeway in northern Los Angeles.
Los Angeles County fire spokesman Captain Mike Brown says about 120 firefighters and three water-dropping helicopters took on the Duarte blaze that started about 2 a.m. Tuesday. He says it's 95 percent contained.
Brown says winds up to 20 mph fanned the flames firefighters kept the blaze inside the riverbed.
Brown says "the fire didn't go anywhere near" homes.

The small fire in the Sunland area 20 miles north of downtown broke out just after 6 a.m. It had burned about one acre but all westbound lanes of the Foothill Freeway were closed at La Tuna Canyon Road so firefighters could get at the blaze.
