Why One Mainstream News Outlet Hasn't Been Covering All the News

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Lack of Reporting

There are now growing questions, investigations and congressional actions surrounding the Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now, known as ACORN. Employees at separate offices were fired after being filmed advising a couple posing as a prostitute and her pimp to lie about her supposed profession on tax forms.

But the item has been largely ignored by the mainstream media, despite ACORN receiving a reported 53 million in taxpayer dollars since 1994. And one network news anchor says he was not even aware of the story. ABC's Charlie Gibson was asked today on WLS Radio’s "Don & Roma Show" about the lack of coverage and said: "I don't even know about it so you've got me at a loss. I don't know. But my goodness, if it's got everything including sleaziness in it — we should talk about it this morning," later adding, "Maybe that's just one you leave to the cables."

Not So Off-the-Record

In an off-the-record comment before an interview with CNBC Monday, President Obama called hip-hop musician Kanye West a "jackass" for his actions during Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. The reason the comment didn't stay off the record? ABC's Terry Moran posted it on the Internet messaging Web site Twitter soon after the CNBC raw tape was fed from the White House and seen by ABC. Moran's post was then picked up on several blogs and Internet sites. He wrote: "President Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential."

At the video awards, West grabbed the microphone from teen country singer Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech to say that singer Beyonce had a better video.

ABC has apologized to the White House and CNBC for the Twitter release of the president's comment, calling it a mistake.

When asked whether the president was upset at the report, White House spokesman Bill Burton said: "I'm not going to get into what the president had to say in an off-the-record conversation. But you should see what (White House chief of staff) Rahm (Emanuel) said about it."

Burton then laughed when asked if the president would apologize to West.

Stark Remarks

And California Democratic Congressman Pete Stark has had a history of saying some pretty interesting things to folks who disagree with him, but this one may take the cake. During a town hall meeting at a senior center, a man upset over health care reform said: "Mister Congressman, don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining." To which Stark responded: "I wouldn't dignify you by peeing on your leg, it wouldn't be worth wasting the urine."

When a second angry attendee accused Stark of lying about health care reform, Stark added: "Whether you think I'm a liar or not, I still want to get your input — and I'll make up how I'm gonna lie about it after I get it."
