Why Government-Run Health Care Is a Bad Idea

I want to let you in on a little secret about why I'm opposed to President Obama's rush to get a government health care plan in place.

It's not personal opposition to President Obama and, in fact, it's not even political opposition because it's being pushed exclusively by Democrats.

It's because of what I know about how government works and how even good ideas go bad when put through the legislative process.

I'm not a shill for insurance companies. The heavy-handed way in which they often put profits ahead of patients is partly to blame for the clamor to "fix things." But in the case of Obama-care, the cure will be worse than the malady.

When government does something, it doesn't worry about how much it will cost. It can borrow the money, print more money or just charge you more in the form of higher taxes. With Obama-care, it will require all three. It will cost more because of the nature of the legislative process.

There will be 535 chefs all seeking to "season" the stew with their personal touch or their personal and political interests. There are 35,000 lobbyists in Washington and they are being paid big bucks to get something out of the plan for their clients. If you're not one of their clients, you might not get the benefit.

Government doesn't have to compete; it doesn't have to be successful; it doesn't have to make a profit or be efficient, and it doesn't even have to work very well. And, if it doesn't work, it won't necessarily change or go out of business -- but you'll still be paying for it.

Congress just voted to buy eight new Gulfstream jets with $500 million of your money so they can be squired around the world. They are spending $3 billion of your money to subsidize car purchases and then grind up the old cars. Do you trust them to give you more and better health care for less money?

The real issue is this: Who do you trust? Congress? The president? Insurance companies? Your doctor?
