Ladies, the first thing I must say is, yes, I know Oprah is a saint. No arguments there. I wouldn't dream of crossing the millions of American women who worship at the altar of Oprah.
I just have one little teeny bit of carping about her latest saintly work, which is the multimillion-dollar girls' academy Oprah just opened in South Africa. It cost $40 million. It is made up of 28 buildings on 22 acres, and it is considered lavish by those who have seen it.
Each of the 152 girls accepted at the academy will have a huge room, oversized closets, 200 thread count sheets, Oprah-designed special uniforms, a yoga studio, a beauty salon, indoor and outdoor theaters, and other luxury touches.
Thirty-five hundred girls applied for the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, and 3,348 were rejected. Oprah said she wanted to make certain the girls felt special, and no doubt they will. But what about the 3,348 others? Don't they now feel rejected, especially the last 348 who were personally interviewed by Oprah but rejected?
I just think she could have made it for more girls. If poor black girls in Africa need help — and no doubt they do — why help only 152 when you've got millions and millions to give?
And by the way, know why Oprah didn't concentrate her efforts here in America? Here's her quote:
"I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there. If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."
Uhh, just asking, but can anybody else in America say that and get away with it?
