Who Killed Eve Carson?

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, HOST: It's just unbelievable, the student body president of UNC Chapel Hill murdered, gunned down. Police found Eve Carson's body at 5:00 AM yesterday morning, lying dead in a residential neighborhood near campus, her killer still out there. And of course, the university is stunned.

Joining us live is a professor at UNC who is also a friend of Eve's, Dr. Ted Leinbaugh. Welcome, Ted. What a terrible — I mean, I don't know what to say to you or to anybody else, other than that, you know, we all feel horrible about this incident, and of course, the other student we're talking about don't. But Eve, when was the last time you spoke to her?

TED LEINBAUGH, UNC PROFESSOR: I spoke to her a couple of weeks ago — bright, lively, fun, affectionate, effervescent — just a total shock that she's gone.

VAN SUSTEREN: You know, the police have to look at every angle. And of course, one of the angles is, you know, whether there was a carjacking or a robbery, which always seems the most likely in a circumstance like this, but also whether or not she might have been targeted. Did she have enemies? Do you know if she had anyone who was threatening her?

LEINBAUGH: I don't know of anyone who did not love Eve. Eve was a remarkable person — charismatic, affectionate, endearing, absolutely charming. And about 5,000 people, I believe, were gathered at a vigil this afternoon. I think she must have hugged every one of them at some point during her four years at UNC.

VAN SUSTEREN: You know, one of the other things — and this is a — and I can't imagine how she could possibly have this because I've looked at her resume, I've looked at her schedule, her life. But could she have had a secret life and had some...

LEINBAUGH: Stellar resume.

VAN SUSTEREN: What?

LEINBAUGH: Stellar resume. I've known her for four years...

VAN SUSTEREN: Go ahead, sir.

LEINBAUGH: I'm sorry. Go ahead. Absolutely stellar resume, completely natural. What you saw was Eve. Knew her her freshman year. I do some work for the British government, invited her to go to a function at the British embassy. She was traveling with other freshmen several days away from campus, and the sense was from those who knew her well, who traveled with her, roommates, that she was just universally admired, a great friend to everybody on campus, faculty. In general, you couldn't find a better student.

VAN SUSTEREN: And that's what we're hearing from all her friends. Dr. Leinbaugh, thank you, sir.

LEINBAUGH: Absolutely.

VAN SUSTEREN: Joining us live is another one of Eve's friends, Adam Rhew. Welcome, Adam.

ADAM RHEW, FRIEND OF MURDERED UNC STUDENT: Greta, thanks for having me.

VAN SUSTEREN: Boy, this is tough, isn't it, Adam. I mean, it's, like, it's so — it's so horrible and so tough for all of you.

RHEW: Yes, it is. It's especially tough, I think, Greta, because Eve was so visible on campus, and I think that was one of the things that really stunned students is because she so well connected to so many students.

VAN SUSTEREN: It's almost — the ones who are so obvious and so well connected and seen all over, they almost seem invincible, and then something like this happens.

RHEW: Yes, that's exactly right. They do seem invincible. And really, when you have somebody like Eve, who's so charismatic and so outgoing and whose schedule is just jam-packed, you never think that something like this would happen to them. But it certainly does.

VAN SUSTEREN: Any reason why she might be where she was found dead?

RHEW: You know, Greta, that's an area near where a lot of students live, and so it's very possible she could have been there visiting friends, maybe driving somebody home at that hour. That would be something that Eve would do, would say, Hey, you know, you can't drive home right now, let me take you home. And so it's very possible she could have been in the area, visiting friends or taking somebody home. But it is an area that's highly populated by students.

VAN SUSTEREN: Well, you know, it's so tough. All of us were looking at this YouTube video of Eve giving a little tour of the school. You know, it's almost like, you know, we begin to know her as we watch this. Anyway, Adam, thank you very much for joining us this evening, Adam.

RHEW: Greta, thank you for having me.
