For the thousands who served in the U.S. Merchant Marine, it is one of the most overlooked chapters in the story of World War II.
The U.S. Merchant Marine played a crucial role in every theater. Without the bridge of merchant ships delivering tons of weapons, troops, food, ammunition, and fuel from the home front to the battle lines, there would have been no Allied victory.
While transiting the ocean, the United States Merchant Marine had to contend with wolf packs of German U-boats seeking to destroy them. In addition, dive-bombers, surface raiders, auxiliary raiders, and mines made their life at sea a living hell. When the war ended in 1945, nearly 80,000 Allied mariners and 5,000 ships lay at the bottom of the sea.
