BOUNTIFUL, Utah – Police checking on the welfare of a 50-year-old Bountiful, Utah, woman and her 18-year-old son found blood and a freezer containing a body Monday.
The body was stuffed in the chest freezer head first and officers could not tell whether it was male or female. They were waiting for it to thaw before removing it.
Police met relatives of Laura Hauck and her son, Jeremy, on Monday morning after the woman's sister had not heard from them since Friday morning.
"Officers entered the condo through an open window on the second floor," said Detective Randy Pickett. "They noticed a strange odor, and found blood on a mattress and in a downstairs room."
Stinking meat apparently taken from the freezer was discarded on the floor nearby.
"We can't tell if the body is male or female," Pickett said. "All we know is that it is a shaved leg." Outside the freezer was a .22-caliber shell. A .22-caliber rifle and a second shell in another room.
Police were looking for the car the mother and son shared, a 2001 or 2002 blue Toyota Corolla with a temporary license plate.
Laura Hauck works for a nearby scrapbooking business and Jeremy Hauck is a recent graduate of Viewmont High School.
