Los Angeles police say a University of Southern California student has been fatally stabbed outside an apartment building near the campus.

Police spokesman Lt. John Romero says 23-year-old Bryan Richard Frost was walking with two friends early Thursday when a man yelled at the group.

The comment provoked a reaction and things escalated to where Frost and the man were fighting.

Frost was stabbed and pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. Frost was a cinema arts student from Eagle, Idaho.

In the hours after the stabbing, USC officials text-messaged thousands of staff members and students informing them of the killing.
