SURF CITY, N.J. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is back at work scouring the sands of Long Beach Island for any remaining World War I era munitions that were accidentally pumped ashore two years ago as part of a beach replenishment project.
More than 1,100 old fuses and small anti-aircraft shells have been found.
Officials stress that most don't pose a danger, but say they need to find any remaining items just in case.
Cleanup costs could hit $17 million.
The presence of the munitions, which were dumped overboard from Navy ships during World War I, angered local officials and residents.
The munitions have even sprouted a cottage industry in T-shirts with slogans like "I Had A Blast on Long Beach Island."
