Two students were wounded Wednesday during a robbery attempt outside a high school near Los Angeles, authorities said.

The victims, ages 16 and 19, were hospitalized in fair condition.

The shooting at Gardena High School occurred in an outdoor area near a classroom after one of three men demanded money from the 19-year-old, said Los Angeles police Sgt. John Pasquariello.

When the victim said he didn't have any cash and turned to walk away, the robber fired. The 16-year-old girl was standing next to the 19-year-old.

Police were searching for the suspects.

The shooting happened less than 15 minutes before the 3,200-student school was to recess for the day.
