Two children were killed and a woman was injured when a passenger train hit a sport utility vehicle stopped on the tracks in central North Carolina.

A statement from Durham police said Wednesday that an Amtrak passenger train was traveling westbound when it struck a Ford Explorer stopped on the tracks at 5:19 p.m. The warning arms came down and the SUV was apparently blocked in by traffic.

Police said the two unidentified boys, ages 9 and 6, were thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, who was identified as the driver of the SUV, was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment.

There were 129 people on the Amtrak train. Authorities said none of them was injured.
