WASHINGTON – Kenneth Mead, who has served as Transportation Department inspector general longer than anyone else, said Monday he's resigning in three weeks after being on the job for almost nine years.
Mead, in his resignation letter, praised his staff for having a steady moral compass and the determination to protect the taxpayers' interests.
Inspectors general have been appointed to root out government waste and fraud since Congress created the position in 1978.
