Timeline: Reconstruction Progress in Iraq

The following is an abbreviated list of the reconstruction and humanitarian efforts coalition forces have been participating in and organizing in Iraq:

July 23:

-- Forces set up telephone lines, remove solid waste and sewage from city streets and establish a youth soccer program near Mosul.

-- 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) repairs telephone connections throughout Nineveh province.

-- Solid waste and sewage are removed from the streets of Mosul. A sewage disposal center is set up and forces are clearing sewage lines to stop the flooding of waste in the streets.

-- 101st AAD and Mosul Olympic Committee establish a youth soccer program for youth males ages 8 to 18. The 103-game season is scheduled to last until the beginning of the school year in September and is a feeder program for the Iraqi Olympic soccer team.

July 22:

-- U.S. Central Command announces that Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday and Qusay, died in a firefight with U.S. forces.

-- More than 80 percent of Iraq's university students have returned to class.

-- In Sulaymaniah, soldiers of the 101st AAD completed the training of 327 Iraqi border guards at a Kurdish Peshmerga compound. Volunteers received training in conducting customs and security duties at border crossings with Iran. Border guards will begin on-the-job training under the supervision of soldiers in the 101st.

-- In Mosul, the 101st AAD hired nearly 4,000 Iraqis to help with key security and reconstruction programs in northern Iraq.

July 19:

-- 4th Infantry Division engineers open the Buffalo Soldier Bridge, which spans the Tigris River. It was the first completed joint project between the 4th ID's 14th Engineer Battalion and local Iraqis.

-- 101st AAD delivers 50,000 liters of water to the village of Musaid, which doesn't have a water pipeline or well. The 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st AAD started a drinkable water delivery program to help small villages and towns in the area surrounding Mosul.

-- 122nd Engineer Battalion of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment meets with school principals, community representatives and parents throughout Al Anbar to discuss plans for improvement. Schools will receive up to $20,000 to purchase supplies.

-- 1st Armored Division continues renovating six medical clinics and other ongoing projects, which includes fuel, food and medical supply distribution as well as coordinating supplies for the upcoming student exams.

-- 3rd Infantry Division coordinates the delivery of an X-ray, dental chair and office furniture to the Taji and Mandy Al Batchechy medical clinics.

July 13:

-- In the provinces of Salah Ad Din, Diyala and At Tamin, the 4th Infantry Division and Task Force Ironhorse are managing more than 150 reconstruction projects that include education, health and human services, public works, security and communications.

-- The Tikrit Model School will receive a fresh coat of paint along with mechanical, electrical and plumbing improvements. The Samarra Health Clinic and Hospital will receive new equipment to replace that which was damaged or looted during the war.

-- In At Tamim, 76 new law enforcement officers will receive training at the Kirkuk Police Academy. Repairs and improvements will be made at the Communications Office.

-- In the past 48 hours, coalition forces tested water samples in Al Wajihya and Muqadidiyah, in the Ba’qubah area, and An Nasiriyah.

-- In Samarra, troops disbursed $10,025 for the refurbishment of the local water treatment facility.

-- In Fallujah, forces working with an Iraqi trash removal service removed almost 55 truckloads of trash. To date, approximately 1,854 truckloads of trash have been removed from the area.

July 12:

-- In Karbala, more than 445 applications are received for the next Facilities Protection Services training class, which educates on how to guard power plants, water treatment plants and other infrastructures.

-- More than 50 police department trainees selected in Khanaquin, in the Ba’qubah area.

-- Coalition rebuilds communities in Baghdad through Task Force Neighborhood, a partnership between coalition forces and Iraqi civilians. Also in Baghdad, forces purchase $4,749 worth of chairs, desks, air conditioners and laboratory equipment for a Baghdad school.

July 10:

-- Soldiers from the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion seize 12 Iraqi artifacts while conducting a raid on a residence of a suspected smuggler in Baghdad.

July 6:

-- The Combined Joint Task Force-Seven Beanies for Baghdad Program delivers more than 7,000 Beanie Babies and more than 1,000 school supply items to local neighborhoods, hospitals children’s ward, dental care units, communities rebuilding projects and community children centers.

-- In Kirkuk, the 404th Civil Affairs Battalion helps deliver test-taking supplies to the technical institute and college to train students to enter the workforce.

July 5:

-- A new police station opens in Mokakaha with 36 graduates; the correctional facility graduates 70 correctional officers.

-- In Mosul, up to 4 million liters of benzene is delivered to Ninewa Province.

-- In Baghdad, the City Advisory Council selects 36 of the 37 members vetted to help Iraqis establish their own government.

-- The 1st Brigade Combat Team and the 101st Airborne Division continue to fight a sulfur plant fire in Mosul.

-- End of the week-long Operation Sidewinder, conducted by the 4th Infantry Division. About 282 individuals were detained. Weapons seized included: 96 AK-47 rifles, 3 heavy machine guns, 217 rocket-propelled grenades, 33 grenades, 200 60mm-mortar rounds, and other military equipment, documents, weapons and ammunition.

July 4:

-- British soldiers carry out a shock raid on a house in Khor Az Zubayr, in Basra, and arrest three suspected drug dealers and seize 33 million Iraqi dinar, ($11,000), forgery equipment, some suspected cannabis resin and two bags of pills. The three men are handed over to the Iraqi police.

July 3:

-- Irrigation water reaches Tala’a, a small village near Al Hillah in southern Iraq, for the first time in three years.

-- In Najaf, 201 facility protection service guards graduate from security training; 67 will work at oil and gas facilities and 134 will work at hospitals.

-- In Fallujah, coalition forces transfer authority and responsibility for the security of the power substation to the local police.

-- Sewer pipes being cleaned throughout the country to minimize sewage backup and reduce the chances of a health epidemic. Five septic trucks are provided to Baghdad’s Al Schweb neighborhood.

-- Three doctors from Korea Food for the Hungry International and Global Care complete the re-creation of disabled veterans’ medical records.

-- The 3rd Infantry Division's 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, continues distributing medical supplies to the Khaldiyah Medical Clinic.

July 2:

-- Iraqi and coalition firefighters, along with engineers from the 101st Airborne Division, battles to control a fire at the Misraq State Sulfur Plant, 20 miles south of Mosul. Soldiers evacuate civilians in the vicinity of the fire. A shelter is established in Qayyarah.

-- 101st Airborne Division completes training of 21 facility protection service force personnel and 13 university security guards in military ethics, medical skills, crowd control and weapons proficiency skills.

-- Coalition forces and Iraqi police make 1,184 day and 940 night patrols throughout the country over the last 24 hours. About 120 people are arrested for various criminal activities, including murder, kidnapping, car jacking, aggravated assault and looting.

-- 101st Airborne Division is rebuilding the Al Mothana Youth Center in Mosul, which was previously occupied and damaged by Saddam Fedeyeen. It will feature Olympic parks and an arts and crafts facility.

-- 3rd Infantry Division’s engineers help local trash collection services remove approximately 1,300 truckloads of garbage from Fallujah area.

-- In Baghdad, the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade distributes 10,000 trash bags to the Abu Deshir community to have local Iraqi residents help clean up efforts.

July 1:

-- 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Baghdad and World Food Program provides 23,000 meals to six area hospitals.

-- In Makhmur, the 101st Airborne conducts two police academy training classes with 135 candidates in Hammani Al Alil and Al Hadr.

-- In Baghdad, the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade delivers medical supplies to the new Baghdad Public Health Clinic #1 in the Karadah municipality.

-- In Fallujah, 3rd Infantry Division engineers work on improvements to Al Fallujah Hospital’s electrical and water chlorination systems.

June 30:

-- The 4th Infantry Division completes repairs to two wells in Yzedi towns, which never had their own water source.

-- In Fallujah, the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion distributes 3,000 gallons of potable water to residents due to the 40 water main breaks engineers are repairing.

-- 3rd Infantry Division engineers continue to clear unexploded ordnance. A total of 56 sites throughout the country, consisting of more than 4,200 pieces of ordnance have been destroyed to date.

-- In Baghdad, the 1st Armored Division delivers 1,200 gallons of diesel and perform preventive maintenance on a generator at Al-Najat orphanage.

-- 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment delivers 6,000 Humanitarian Daily Rations to residents in Al Qaim and schedules a third delivery to the hospital in Ar Ramadi.

June 29:

-- 418th Civil Affairs Battalion completes work on the Tikrit Women's College project and provides it with supplies.

-- 1st Armored Division meets with artist and vendors to discuss the opening of the Baghdad Zawra Park Zoo.

-- 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment continues to issue HDRs from the World Food Bank Organization to the Al Anbar Province, Trebil and Ar Ramadi.

-- In Mosul, "Task Force Pothole" repairs 14 potholes

June 28:

-- In Sulaymaniyah, coalition completes a project to purchase $1,500 in four-month's worth of medical supplies for the Bayinjan Clinic.

-- In Fallujah, basic school supplies are delivered and 3,000 gallons of water are distributed.

-- Coalition begins a Free Fuel Push, distributing approximately 5,000 gallons of fuel to Fallujah.

-- Power is restored in Al Karma after thieves cut buried wire. The Electric Department is given 25 electrical safety helmets.

-- Coalition delivers medical supplies to Ar Ramadi for local hospitals.

-- 3rd Infantry Division Support Command helps restore clean water to the towns of Al Janabai and Al Qaqaa that supplies 2,200 families. They also aid in plumbing repairs and construction of new fences at an elementary school and middle school.

-- 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment engineers remove 100 truckloads of trash and debris from Fallujah.

-- Reviews conducted for future reconstruction projects at water, sanitation, medical facilities and schools.

June 26:

-- UNICEF gives the Dahuk Health Department a year's supply of immunizations.

-- Coalition continues removing 16 truckloads of sewage in Ghazaliya and Shula.

-- In Baghdad, 45 Iraqis and the coalition paint and clean up trash at Ma' Alla' School.

June 25:

-- The World Food Program completes the month's food distribution program in Ad Diwaniyah.

-- 200-250 immunizations are given to children in Karbala

-- British Army begins train-the-trainer course for U.S. Army soldiers on internal security, counter-terrorism and peacekeeping support.

-- In Fallujah, local television stations are back up.

-- In Tikrit, the first 1,000 copes of the Salah Ad Deen newspaper are distributed.

-- Coalition continues repairing damaged guard-rails, traffic lights and signs, and continues sewage and garbage removal. Forces also fix soccer fields and goal nets, rebuild 20 desks at a local school, install lights and paint. Students are given vaccinations.

-- The Public Safety Team hosts a police convention for the Karbala Police Department and Karbala Traffic police.

-- In Nasiriyah, the International Medical Corps installs showers and sinks at local orphanages.

June 24:

-- Coalition conducts 1,068 day patrols and 837 night patrols over the past 24 hours and others jointly with Iraqi police.

-- In Fallujah, the Thunawait Al Fallujah Lilbenat Girls Secondary School receives school supplies such as fans, blackboards and stationary.

-- Fallujah receives 148,000 liters of benzene, which is found in gasoline and other fuels. It's also used in the manufacture of plastics, detergents, pesticides and other chemicals.

-- Coalition meets with Al Zahara neighborhood council in Baghdad and develops a garbage clean-up program.

-- Vaccines are administered to about 100 people in Baghdad.

June 23:

-- In Kirkuk, the coalition fire department team coordinates with Raytheon Corporation for a contract bid to get a telecommunication system at the Kirkuk Fire Department up and running.

-- In Tall Afar, the public safety system team writes proclamation to ensure Iraqi police aren't taking bribes and turns all fuel operations over to local officials.

-- In Baquabah, UNICEF delivers 15 one-ton chlorine gas cylinders to the city water treatment plant on June 17. An additional 46 cylinders have been purchased.

In Baghdad, the coalition delivers toys to Mother Teresa’s Orphanage and services the generator there. School supplies, donated by U.S. parent/teacher organizations and families, are also delivered to the Al Azaam Elementary School.

--More local shops open along some major thoroughfares.

-- In Karbala, civil affairs in conjunction with the Karbala City Council, host an awards ceremony for the Karbala traffic police. The Karbala Police Department training division opens.

-- In As Samawah, the grain silos are at full capacity. Wheat trucks diverted to Al Hillah where the grain is needed.

June 20:

-- Aid includes repairs to electric power infrastructure, gas and repair assessments of local schools and to the water system by the 3rd Infantry Division. The 101st Airborne Division continues to distribute food.

-- World Food Program and humanitarian food convoys are escorted from Jordan to Iraq by the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

-- Mosul receives 113 benzene and 27 propane trucks

June 14:

-- Operation Peninsula Strike ends. The raid includes soldiers from 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade; the 173rd Airborne Brigade; and 3rd Infantry Division’s 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment.

June 13:

-- Conditions in Kirkuk and Mosul continue to improve on a daily basis. Traffic has increased, basic services are up and running, many citizens accept the interim government and city governments are getting under way.

-- Payments are given to 500 additional Iraqi government ministry personnel.

-- Forces deliver 843,300 liters of fuel and 3,940 cylinders of propane in western Baghdad.

-- Eighty-four of 88 Neighborhood Advisory Councils established in Baghdad.

-- Preliminary estimates for water infrastructure improvement projects in Adhamiyah are obtained.

-- Sewage and garbage removal project in the Al Farat area continues.

-- "Task Force Neighborhood" mission in Baghdad renovates a soccer field and a school/clinic.

-- Coalition conducts a women’s clinic mission near Hadithah that treats 50 Iraqi women and numerous children.

-- Forces assess the Fallujah Brick and Cement Factory for serviceability and assist in efforts to reopen it.

-- Seventy-eight benzene and 59 propane trucks arrive in Baghdad from Turkey.

-- In southern Iraq, forces coordinate the barley and wheat subsidy plan in Al Hillah with agricultural officials.

-- Coalition escorts fuel trucks as they distribute 560,000 gallons of fuel in As Samawah, Ar Rumaythah and Al Khidr.

-- Forces assist the Ad Diwaniyah water director in locating 10 tons of chlorine for water purification, alleviating the current shortage of this critical water purification chemical.

-- The Al-Rifah school in Najaf, rehabilitated by U.S. Navy Seabees, is reopened.

-- $25,500 is delivered to the Karbala Minister of Health for renovation of the Al Hussein Hospital.

-- Karbala sanitation workers begin the cleaning of the aeration tanks at the water treatment plant in preparation for the final power washing. Karbala distributes 60 tons of propane cooking fuel to residents.

-- Forces monitor and provide security for the distribution of bonuses to the headmasters of the Al Kut schools. An estimated 6,574 teachers receive their $30 bonuses.

-- As of June 13, Iraqi citizens have turned in 115 pistols, 75 semi-automatic rifles or shotguns, 406 automatic rifles, 45 machine guns, 152 anti-tank weapons, 11 anti-air weapons and 266 grenades and other explosive devices as part of the Weapons Turn-In Program that began June 1.

June 12:

-- Final arrangements made for the shipment of 4,000 soccer balls from Karachi, Pakistan.

June 11:

-- Two-and-a-half-ton truckload of medical supplies is delivered to the Al Karmah Primary Health Center and $3,000 to the local water department to serve 11,000 people.

-- Several police cars are repaired and others are acquired in Baghdad.

-- Sixteen truckloads of medical supplies are delivered for distribution to hospitals in An Nasariyah.

June 10:

-- Three thousand gallons of water are delivered to villages in Tall Afar and 4,000 gallons of water is delivered to Sununi.

-- Medical supplies are delivered to a medical clinic in Ad Duluyah.

June 7:

-- Thirteen truckloads of garbage are removed from a Baghdad mosque.

-- Relics are recovered from a black market in Al Fajr and contact is made with an archaeologist to discuss their proper disposition in An Nasariyah.

June 6:

-- Bulk medical supplies are delivered to hospitals in Baghdad.

-- A soccer field is cleared in Mahkmur.

-- Eight truckloads of ammunition caches are cleared/transported from schools in Mosul.

-- Coalition works with local authorities to develop summer youth programs in Mosul.

-- Coalition works to rebuild the water pump station in Al Dujayl.

-- Coalition delivers a refrigerator and generator to Baghdad Clinic #8.

-- Coalition distributes 4.4 million liters of gasoline.

-- Coalition delivers bulk medical supplies to eight Baghdad hospitals.

-- Coalition locates a medical supply warehouse with a large stock of supplies, which will be distributed to the local hospitals in As Samawah.

June 5:

-- Coalition conducts the 10th "Task Force Neighborhood" mission in the Al Rashid District of Baghdad. With the help of 50 hired Iraqis, the coalition repairs four doors in the Al Shafek Middle School for girls, rewires and connects electrical power to the district council building and hauls away 280 tons of rubble from behind the district counsel building. Dental treatment is provided to 39 patients and 11 rocket-propelled grenade rounds are removed from a market place. Ammunition and weapons are removed from two other sites.

June 4:

-- Coalition conducts the 9th Task Force Neighborhood mission in the Al Baaya neighborhood. Four hundred and forty tons of trash is removed from around local soccer fields and schools, dental care is provided to 39 civilians and support is provided to local medical facilities. Coalition also rewires local school and fire department building, establishes primary electrical power to the school, welds three school gates, repairs 12 desks and builds three shelving units for the Al Baaya school. Over 100 Beanie Babies are handed out to children at a school.

-- An Iraqi amusement park is opened in Baghdad.

-- Coalition clears four roads and continues to gravel three major dirt roads in Mosul.

-- Coalition administers 1,200 measles vaccinations to children in Kirkuk.

June 3:

-- Coalition collects soccer balls for distribution as part of "Operation U.S. Soccer," an American Youth Soccer Organization-sponsored program.

-- Coalition distributes 3.4 million liters of gasoline and 58,940 bottles of propane in Baghdad.

-- Coalition conducts a Task Force Neighborhood mission in Makhmur, focusing cleanup operations on the local school and market area.

-- Coalition continues deliveries of potable water to the Sununi area.

-- Coalition assists in efforts renovate a former Iraqi Army water treatment plant that provides filtered and chlorinated water to approximately 5,000 people in Al Kut.

June 2:

-- Coalition executes $40,000 in payments to the Kadhimiya University Hospital, compensating 2,000 workers.

-- Coalition works with medical facilities near Baghdad International Airport to coordinate the delivery of U.S. medical supplies, particularly antibiotics.

-- Coalition hosts Iraqi families at the opening of a children's amusement park in Northern Iraq.

-- Coalition assists electric power employees in reconstructing the four towers that hold 400 kV power lines, which will provide consistent power to the province when they are repaired in Al Kut.

-- Coalition delivers 400 cases of water to 189 families in the village of Al Harza.

June 1:

-- Coalition facilitates more than 40 humanitarian missions, expanding their efforts to areas north of the Al Basrah area.

-- Coalition facilitates 397 truckloads (over 9,000 metric tons) of World Food Program food consignments from Turkey to Dohuk, Mosul, Erbil and Sulaymaniwah.

-- Twenty-six truckloads of bulk food shipments are received at the U.N. food distribution site for a total of 479 shipments delivered to date.

-- Sixty-nine benzene and 58 propane trucks are received from Turkey. More than 24,000 liters of benzene and nearly 19,000 propane canisters are distributed.

-- School supplies are delivered to the girl's high school in Qayyarah.

-- Electrical system repairs are completed at a bulk propane distribution center near Tal Afar.

-- $600 in tools are delivered to the computer center at the University of Mosul.

-- Coalition monitors $8,900 in payments to seven school headmasters to pay teachers.

-- Two shipments of propane are distributed to local vendors to provide local citizens with cooking fuel in Najaf.

-- Two seven-ton truckloads of supplies are delivered to the educational warehouse for distribution to local schools in Ad Diwaniyah.
