British police said three people were killed Saturday in an avalanche on a ountain in the Scottish Highlands.

The Northern Constabulary said the three died on Buchaile Etive Mor, a mountain near Fort William in northwest Scotland. A fourth person had an injured shoulder, police said.

In all, nine people were rescued from the mountain Saturday. Five were uninjured.

Rescuers worked in near-blizzard conditions to rescue the climbers from the distinctive pyramid-shaped mountain. The area has had heavy snowfall over the past few days.

Scotland's Avalanche Information Service had rated the avalanche risk Saturday as "considerable."
