When you’re engaged in a war, you want to win it, right? Well, apparently not, according to author Jonathan Schell (search)'s writing in the current issue of The Nation magazine.

In an article entitled, “The Importance of Losing the War,” Mr. Schell suggests that surrendering to the terrorists who are now plaguing U.S. forces and civilians in Iraq may be the better part of valor.

To quote Mr. Schell, “[Democratic Senator Joe] Biden says we must win the war. This is precisely wrong. The United States must learn to lose this war – a harder task, in many ways, than winning, for it requires admitting mistakes and relinquishing attractive fantasies. This is the true moral mission of our time.”

As far as we can tell, this is the first open call for absolute surrender in Iraq. And while The Nation magazine is small, its influence is big, so stay tuned.

That’s the Asman Observer.
