An East Texas man has been convicted in the shooting death of his estranged wife as she cooked dinner.

The penalty phase was scheduled to continue Friday in Nacogdoches for 40-year-old Kyle Barnhill of San Augustine.

He faces up to 99 years in prison.

Jurors on Thursday convicted Barnhill in the March 11 fatal shooting of Melissa Kesinger Barnhill at her residence in Nacogdoches.

Police say the 38-year-old woman was preparing dinner for her two children when she was shot through a kitchen window. She died of a gunshot wound to the neck.

Police say the Barnhills had separated and were divorcing.

Barnhill, who confessed to the killing, was arrested March 16 in the Eagle Pass area, a city near the border with Mexico.
