When Jessica Lindberg decided to get a contraceptive implant — she never expected what would unfold in the months to come.

But the Swedish teenager got the shock of her life when doctors discovered she was 20 weeks pregnant during a procedure to remove the implant, the Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra reported Wednesday.

It turns out Lindberg had gotten a “dummy” contraceptive implant. She was just 16 when she got pregnant and is now the mother of a 2-year-old boy.

Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare and the public health disciplinary board is just now reviewing the case, but has failed to come up with an explanation.

The pharmaceutical company that makes the implants said a mistake is very unlikely since the dummy contraceptive is blue and the real implants are white.
