At least two people are in custudy after a male teacher was shot outside a Miami-area high school Monday during an apparent robbery attempt, according to a report from WSVN in Florida .

The male teacher was shot in the lower body, said Quintin Taylor, a spokesman for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

He had been taking a cigarette break across the street from the school during lunch when he was confronted by another man who tried to rob him, Taylor said.

The teacher, whose name is not being officially released, "was alert as he was being transported to the hospital," Taylor said.

School officials told students the shot teacher was algebra instructor Sergio Miranda, according to the Miami Herald.

Jackson Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Maria Rosa Carrero confirmed that the teacher was being treated at the center but was not authorized to release details of his condition.

A 911 call reported the shooting before noon at Miami Carol City Senior High School, Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.

"No students inside the school have been injured," Taylor said.

Schools were locked down for several hours while a SWAT team searched a nearby apartment building for the suspects.
