Personal information for more than 2,000 taxpayers may have been stolen after a government audit revealed that at least 490 IRS computers have been stolen or lost since 2003.

Most of the missing computers, which were lost in 387 incidents, were not reported to the IRS computer security office, according to USA Today.
The laptops also reportedly lacked password controls and encryption software designed to protect taxpayer information.
"This is a serious concern," Inspector General J. Russell George told USA Today. "The American public relies on the IRS to protect the personal information they provide."
The paper reported personal information on at least 2,359 individuals was lost.
