A Closer Look

Amid the health care law's thousands of pages are provisions that haven't gotten much attention but may affect your life in all sorts of ways.

First, there is the requirement that all workplaces with more than 50 employees provide breast pumping areas for new mothers. They are also required to allow as many breaks as new moms need to take care of business.

Bad news if you enjoy indoor tanning, because the law is imposing a 10 percent excise tax on tanning salons. Excise taxes are typically recovered by, well, raising prices.

And last but not least, the law requires chain restaurants no matter how small to post calorie counts on their menus.

I knew it wouldn't be long before the Democrats even took the fun out of food.

Drain That Swamp

President Obama and Nancy Pelosi's swamp in the sin city of Washington, D.C., is not only alive and well, but getting deeper.

Despite repeatedly pledging to do away with lobbyists in the nation's capital, new numbers reveal that special interests spent a record $3.5 billion on Capitol Hill in the year 2009.

It appears that the Anointed One has gone back on yet another one of his promises. Remember when he said this on his first full day in office?

Really, Mr. President? Then how do you explain the fact that nearly half of your controversial recess appointments last week have ties to or work for special interests?

We'll just file this one away under the change that you can believe in.

Now that the government is in charge of your health care, you are going to be happy to hear how badly they mismanaged the H1N1 pandemic last year.

When all is said and done, $1.6 billion will be spent on the immunization program. Unfortunately, a shocking report in Thursday's Washington Post reveals the government may have slightly over estimated the number of vaccines they needed.

It turns out less than half of the 229 million doses of the vaccine have actually been administered. According to The Post, nearly 72 million of those doses will have to be thrown out.

A spokesman for the CDC sums it up by saying, "Did we do as well as we liked to? No, not at all. But the country did an extraordinary job of responding."

Well said.

Good thing that same federal government is now in the process of taking over the entire health care industry.

Island Fever

An Armed Services Committee hearing became an unexpected source of humor thanks to Democratic Congressman Hank Johnson, who took the opportunity to voice his very deep concern about the Navy's proposed relocation of 8,000 servicemen and their families to the island nation of Guam:

ADMIRAL ROBERT WILLARD: We don't anticipate that.

By the way, Johnson voted in favor of the health care bill. Just one of the many brilliant minds behind that law.
