KHARTOUM, Sudan – A lawyer says Sudan has sentenced eight Darfur rebels to death for their role in a May attack near the capital that left about 200 people dead.
Defense lawyer Al-Dukhri Ali Morkaz says another defendant was acquitted Tuesday and a tenth was referred to a juvenile court because of his age. He says he has one week to appeal the decision.
Government forces arrested hundreds of Darfur rebels after the May 10 attack, and put more than 40 on trial. President Omar al-Bashir has pardoned about 90 juveniles, who are due to be released within two weeks.
The 40 were charged in a special terrorism court with waging war against the state, inciting hatred, possessing guns and belonging to an outlawed group.
