Money can’t buy love, but it can help with pain relief, according to a new study at the University of Minnesota.

In the study, participants were told to count either 80 $100 bills or 80 blank pieces of paper. Then, they held their hands in bowls of very hot water to measure how long they could withstand the heat, and how painful they found it.

The results showed the participants who had handled money instead of blank paper, reported feeling less pain and lasted longer in the hot water.

Researchers thought that handling the money helped increase feelings of confidence and self-sufficiency.

The study was published in the Journal of Psychological Science.
