State Department to Name Fran Drescher a Public Diplomacy Envoy

Fran Drescher will be the latest celebrity personality to represent the United States abroad.

"The Nanny" star and Emmy nominee will be announced Monday as a public diplomacy envoy by Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Goli Ameri. Drescher joins past envoys Cal Ripkin Jr. and Michelle Kwan.

Drescher, 50, is a cancer survivor and founder of the nonprofit organization Cancer Schmancer Movement.

The State Department said her duties will include working with health organizations and women’s groups to raise awareness of women’s health issues, cancer awareness and detection, and patient empowerment and advocacy.

Her first trip is expected to take place at the end of the month and will include stops in Romania, Hungary, Kosovo and Poland.
