A worker was stabbed Tuesday inside a Department of Agriculture (search) building during an altercation with another employee, authorities said. The victim was hospitalized with injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Department spokeswoman Julie Quick said the incident happened about 11 a.m. in a department building at 14th Street and Independence Avenue, along the National Mall (search) and several blocks from the White House. Officials said the unidentified victim and the assailant were both believed to be contract employees.

About 6,500 people work at the building, which was secured briefly so that authorities could search for the assailant and was later reopened.

Marc Raimondi, of the Department of Homeland Security, said the Federal Protective Service (search) was searching for the assailant.
