Six major powers announced they had reached an agreement to impose new sanctions on Iran for its nuclear programs, a news service reported Thursday.

The text of the agreement was sent to the 15-nation U.N. Security Council for a vote, Reuters reported.

The agreement would penalize Iran for not suspending its uranium enrichment program. The measure could be adopted as soon as next week.

The measure would ban all exports of Iranian arms, freeze assetts on any individual or company involved in Tehran's nuclear programs and ask for a ban on all new grants or loans to Iran, Reuters reported.

"We have confirmed we have an agreement on the text," Britain's U.N. Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry announced after consultations with his counterparts from the United States, France, Russia, China and Germany.

"The United Kingdom will introduce that text," he said.
