A former student watching basketball tryouts was shot in the leg at a Massachusetts high school Wednesday afternoon, MyFoxBoston.com reported.

Police are looking for a suspect.

School Superintendent Matthew Malone told reporters outside the high school that the victim was a 17-year-old boy who dropped out of the school a year ago.

The victim was reportedly carried down the stairs of the school on a stretcher and taken to a hospital.

An unidentified student at Brockton High School told the station she heard five shots and saw people running. She said there was "a lot of blood," but the person was moving, MyFoxBoston.com reported.

"When you go to school, you expect to be safe. When something like this happens, it just breaks you down, and makes you feel unsecure," she said in a phone interview with the station from inside of the school.

Police confirmed the shooting took place in the school's gym just before 5 p.m.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
