A rescue team combing a tourist hotspot in northern China failed to find a missing visitor but instead made a ghastly discovery, Reuters reported — seven dead bodies.

The search team had been scouring the area around Taishan Mountain, one of the country's "Five Sacred Peaks" held holy by Daoists, when they stumbled upon the corpses.

"We accidentally found seven corpses during our search over the past few days," the Qilu Evening Post quoted one of the rescuers as saying.

There was no word on how the seven may have died or news of their identities, Reuters reported.

The Beijing tourist, who disappeared April 28, is still missing.
