A search continued Thursday for a 12-year-old Bronx, N.Y., girl who was swept away by the fast-moving waters of the Niagara River after she slipped off a rock while hiking with a church group.

State parks police say an overnight search turned up no sign of the girl, who fell into the water around 1 p.m. Wednesday in Whirlpool State Park in the city of Niagara Falls.

Authorities say the swift current swept the girl into the middle of the river a few miles north of the famous cataracts.

Police say several law enforcement agencies using boats and helicopters continued to search the Niagara Gorge Thursday morning.

Authorities haven't released the girl's name. They say she was with a group of youths and adult chaperones from New York City, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
