HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. – A ground search of wooded, mountainous terrain was under way after several witnesses said they saw a plume of smoke coming from a small plane around Harriman State Park in Haverstraw.
Jim Peters of the Federal Aviation Administration says some sort of aircraft went off the radar Monday night. But it may have just been flying low, or may have gone someplace else. No missing or overdue flights were reported.
Peters says it appears that aircraft took off from the Orange County Airport in Montgomery, N.Y. Pilots leaving small airports are not required to file flight plans.
Detective Lt. William Barbera of the Rockland County sheriff's office said an air search did not immediately resume Tuesday because of poor weather.
