Screaming Bloody Murder

After all the verbal fencing I've done with Canada over the years, it's good to see the pro-American Canadians about to take over.

I know, this is a shock of shockers. Canadian American bashers appear to be on the run up North, chased by pro-American Canadians.

I say this appears to be the case because the election is Monday and the polls aren't closed yet.

But polling ahead of the actual voting shows that the anti-American campaign of the liberals — painting their opponents as the best friends of the hated George W. Bush — isn't working. Conservative leader Stephen Harper holds a lead going into Monday's voting.

The New York Times noted Monday that "among the dissatisfied are voters unhappy with the growing divide between Canada and the United States."

The liberal running against Harper, the current Prime Minister Paul Martin, tried to paint Harper as dangerously pro-American. But all that got Martin was a further slide in his polling numbers.

So as Canadians seem about to go at least moderately pro-American in their national outlook, one prominent anti-American American was screaming bloody murder.

Filmmaker and anti-Bush zealot Michael Moore said this:

"These are no ordinary times, and as you go to the polls on Monday you do so while a man running the nation to the south of you is hoping you can lend him a hand by picking Stephen Harper because he's a man who shares his world view. Do you want to help George Bush by turning Canada into his latest conquest?"

I don't know. Seems to me if the Canadian government didn't spend all of its time trying to stick a finger in the eye of its giant southern neighbor — us — it would be a good thing.

It would be nice if the Canadians worried as much about our border security as we do.

It would be nice if Canada's government didn't give sanctuary to terrorists, especially if their main claim to fame is that they have actually killed Americans on the field of battle.

It would be nice if Canadians realized we have some sawmills left down here and we have an interest in not seeing them driven out of business.

It would be nice if every American effort to make the world safer for Americans and Canadians wasn't met with derision, scorn and condemnation from the Canadian government.

Will we get all that? Maybe not, but I'd settle for even a slightly friendlier tone from our northern neighbors. Even if they still boo our peewee hockey players.
