BAGHDAD – An attorney says a cousin of Saddam Hussein known as "Chemical Ali" has been hospitalized after going on a hunger strike.
Lawyer Badee Izzat Aref says Ali Hassan al-Majid and a co-defendant were admitted to a U.S. medical facility Sunday after they passed out.
Several other defendants also began a hunger strike Friday to protest an order that they stay in cramped quarters at the courthouse instead of in their regular cells.
The U.S. military confirmed Monday that al-Majid was hospitalized in stable condition.
Al-Majid has been sentenced to be executed.
