Police surrounded a Los Angeles restaurant Tuesday, saying a robber may be holed up in a Sunset Boulevard restaurant.

Officer Ana Aguirre says police were called to the Acapulco Restaurant y Cantina shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday by a report that one or more men had tried to rob the establishment, officers told the Los Angeles Times.

Several employees had managed to get out of the building and call police, authorities said, but some remained inside.

"We went in there ... and took them out safely," Officer Kate Lopez said.

Officers believed at least one suspect was still inside some three hours after the robbery attempt, although they had no contact with the man and were unsure whether he was armed.

It was unclear how many employees were in the restaurant when the robbery took place.
