Rev. Franklin Graham, Artists Unite for 'Heal 4 Haiti'

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: Two very special guests are here to go "On the Record" about a new album released today on iTunes called "Healing 4 Haiti." Joining us live is Reverend Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and Grammy award winner Michael W. Smith. I say it is on iTunes, but you can get it right here, right?

MICHAEL W. SMITH, GRAMMY AWARD WINNING ARTIST: That's right.

VAN SUSTEREN: Michael, what is this?

SMITH: It's a record, obviously a CD.

VAN SUSTEREN: Obviously.

(LAUGHTER)

But why?

SMITH: We wanted to come together and do something. I wrote a song four days after the earthquake in Haiti and knew that it wasn't for my record, knew it was a song of hope. And I had this wild idea if we pulled together as much as music city, Nashville, Tennessee, artists of all genres to come together and do this song, which we did. It has been on iTunes for two or three weeks.

But I remember calling Franklin, woke him up when he was in India, and said I wrote in song. Franklin said why don't we put a whole record together? And all this money raised from the record will go to rebuild Haiti. And that's what we did and it is out today.

VAN SUSTEREN: You are working hard. What is Samaritan's Purse doing down there now?

REV. FRANKLIN GRAHAM, SAMARITAN'S PURSE: We have, Greta, medical teams down there. Senator [Bill] Frist has been down there with us operating. He was down there the second week after the earthquake.

We're building temporary shelters. We want to build about 7,500. And each shelter will take about 10 people. I think that's the most critical need right now. We've done food distribution, water purification. But temporary shelter to me right now is the main thing.

Greta, it is such a sad place. So many people have lost their lives. And people are still, their bodies are still in buildings. And you will see a man outside a building looking at the building, and he will say my wife and six children are in there, and there's no way to get them out, there's not enough heavy equipment to live the concrete to remove the bodies.

And it's sad. And people need hope. People need to know that god loves them and he hasn't forgotten them, he hasn't turned his back on them, that he cares for Haiti.

And of course as a Christian I want to do everything I can to let these people know that god understands suffering. His son Jesus Christ died for our sins, and he was buried for our sins, and he rose again. And I want these people to have the hope.

And this "Healing 4 Haiti," this is an opportunity for kids. People come in to me saying Franklin, how can I help? We don't have much, what can we do? Every penny from this album, the proceeds go to help the people of Haiti.

And a kid can download the album. None of the artists are getting anything out of it. They are giving it. There's some -- there may be people further down the food chain that has to be paid because of a license or whatever. But the artists have given this, and the engineers, it is just a fantastic project.

And Michael has really led the way for this integrity music, Tommy Combs, these people to this thing, J.W. Clark, who is with us tonight, they took this ball and ran with it and really made it happen. But Michael has been the spark plug here.

And there's going to be thousands of people that are going to have a chance to help Haiti, tens of thousands of kids.

VAN SUSTEREN: I don't know if people realize, the money from this DVD and the downloads, that Samaritan's Purse is a huge operation. It's in many parts of the world helping out. But even in Haiti before this earthquake there was a hurricane. And so in some ways Samaritan's Purse was already down there and had equipment down there with sort of a jump on the problem.

So the money really does make a big difference in lives. You've traveled places with Franklin, you've seen what Samaritan's Purse has done, so you can see what your work does.

SMITH: Yes, I have. And I've been to Haiti too since the earthquake. And I know there's a lot of great organizations on the ground. I got to see firsthand what Samaritan's Purse was doing, very well organized, just loving on the people, along with our U.S. military, which was very inspirational when I was down there as well. Keeping the peace but loving on these precious people.

VAN SUSTEREN: You did this fast!

SMITH: I said it in many interviews, it is nothing short of a miracle. I've never done a project that fast. So kudos to everyone. So many people who came to the table and said we can do this. There was so much optimism in Nashville, and we pulled it off.

VAN SUSTEREN: Franklin, how many people we got down there?

GRAHAM: We got 90, maybe close to 100 this week. They are working. Everyday rebuilding these shelters is a huge issue. So many houses have been lost. People -- we've handed out tarps. People are living under cardboard, and then it rains and they are living in the mud.
