Reports: Arrest of 'Person of Interest' Possibly Linked to Auburn Freshman's Murder

Alabama media are reporting that a person arrested near the Georgia border in Phenix City, Ala., is connected to the high-profile murder of an Auburn University student.

Meanwhile, Auburn police have scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Saturday CST. It wasn't immediately clear what new information would be disclosed.

WTVM-TV 9 is describing the man or woman in custody as a "person of interest" in the death Tuesday of Lauren Burk, 18, while sources reportedly have told that the Phenix City suspect "could be" the person Auburn police have been looking for.

A Phenix City police lieutenant reached Friday night by FOX News wouldn't confirm or deny the reports, but she said the department had responded earlier in the day to an armed robbery and a high-speed car chase that had ended in an arrest. She wouldn't comment further on that case.

Further questions about the Auburn murder case would be answered Saturday at the news conference, the lieutenant said, and, when asked about her department's involvement, she said Phenix City police would be present at the Saturday event.

Phenix City, on the Georgia border, is about 35 miles from Auburn.

Burk was found shot and wounded on a state highway a few miles from the Auburn University campus. She was taken to a hospital, where she died that night. Her car was found on campus engulfed in flames.
