A 4-story building collapsed late Monday, killing at least two people and injuring several dozen, police and Italian news reports said.

Police in Milan confirmed a building had collapsed on the eastern edge of Italy's financial capital, but no one was immediately available to confirm the number of casualties. The ANSA agency quoted police officials at the scene as saying two people had been killed.

Several emergency and rescue officials were at the scene of the collapse, and ANSA quoted witnesses as saying they had smelled gas shortly before the explosion, which happened about 8 p.m. (1800 GMT).
