Turkey's state-run news agency says Kurdish rebels have fired 10 mortar rounds at an army base close to the Iraqi border, wounding one soldier.

The attack on Wednesday came two days after a group of Kurdish rebels and Kurds crossed into Turkey from northern Iraq on a peace mission in response to a government initiative to end the fighting.

The Anatolia news agency says a commando unit positioned near the town of Cukurca, close to the Iraqi border, came under attack on Wednesday. It says the military units responded, repelling the rebels.

It is not clear if the attack was carried out by splinter Kurdish rebel groups opposed to reconciliation with Turkey.
